Best Practices & Lessons Learned: Italy (Author: Mulpleo)

Needed to raise awareness on the unmet need with policy decision-makers and incorporate the patient’s voice

Situation

Platelet transfusions have been the standard of care for patients when they need to increase platelet counts prior to a procedure. However, in patients with chronic liver disease, platelet transfusions have been shown to be ineffective. There have also been no studies locally that help to convey the patient’s preference in terms of being treated with platelet transfusions to raise platelet counts.

Task

Conducted a scan of advocacy groups throughout Italy to identify the most relevant advocacy group to engage; identified the clinical expert with which to engage on the opportunity as well. Identified EPAC as the advocacy organization most relevant specific to patients with chronic liver disease.

Action

Met with EPAC’s leadership. EPAC in turn designed and conducted a survey with patients who have chronic liver disease and thrombocytopenia. EPAC, working with a clinical expert, developed a white paper publication that was posted on their website.
